How Obama bought support for Obamacare from the big Pharmaceutical companies

Bloomberg reports (hat tip: Instapundit) that the House Energy and Commerce Committee released documents revealing the deal that the Obama administration made with pharmaceutical companies to secure their support for Obamacare.

In a gift to big Pharma, Obama agreed to block re-importation of drugs from Canada and other countries where some drugs are cheaper than in the US.

In return, the pharmaceutical companies promised a big ad campaign to support both Obamacare and the politicians who supported it:

“As part of our agreement, PhRMA needs to undertake a very significant public campaign in order to support policies of mutual interest to the industry and the Administration,” according to a July 14, 2009, memo from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. “We have included a significant amount for advertising to express appreciation for lawmakers’ positions on health care reform issues.”

The goal, the memo said, was to “create momentum for consensus health care reform, help it pass, and then acknowledge those senators and representatives who were instrumental in making it happen and who must remain vigilant during implementation.”

San Francisco Carnaval 2012

San Francisco celebrates Carnaval on Memorial Day weekend with music and lots of salsa dancing. Sunday's parade through the Mission District provides an excuse to take a break from politics and do some rule-5 blogging (click on any picture to enlarge):

While normal people consider the act of merely walking on stilts, some in the parade danced on stilts:

These are not short stilts.

San Francisco's garbage men danced with their garbage cans:

Carnaval features lots of colors:

and lots of feathers:

The Mission District is the Spanish section of San Francisco. The Carnaval celebrations are organized by the San Francisco Cultural Arts Traditions, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving cultural arts traditions with music, dance, artistry and food. Some other cities celebrate Carnaval on Fat Tuesday, the day before the Lenten fast begins. In San Francisco, bowing to the weather, the Carnaval parade is held on the fourth Sunday in May.

After the parade, this dancer relaxed with a bottle of water while still on those tall stilts:

Obama visits the San Francisco Peninsula and a Tea Party breaks out

Pres. Obama had another busy day of fundraising today. First he went to the Atherton home of heirs of the Levi Strauss fortune where he had dinner with supporters who paid $35,800 per plate. He then went to Fox Theatre (where he missed his entrance cue) in Redwood City to mix with supporters who paid from $1,000 to $12,500 per person to attend. Outside the Fox, the San Francisco Tea Party assembled to protest Obama (click photos to enlarge):
Don't get confused by the "Hope-Change" signs above: they read "Hope you like the Change November 6, 2012." There are also signs supporting Romney, opposing "Obama Debt," as well as several of San Francisco's red Nobama 2012 fingers. Here are some more views:

The San Jose Mercury News has a story on this event that manages to miss the story. Their report features Obama supporters and mentions critics of Obama only if they criticize him from the anti-war left. By count of signs, as you can see above, the crowd was overwhelmingly from the Tea Party but the Mercury didn't mention 'tea party' in the story at all. Print newspapers deserve their financial troubles.

This is San Francisco's third Tea Party this year. The first protested outside an Obama fundraiser on Nob Hill. The second was the traditional tax day Tea Party.

Liberals and their sick sexual fantasies

Hustler, a magazine published by prominent Obama supporter Larry Flynt, has printed an obscene fake picture of conservative commentator S. E. Cupp engaging in oral sex:
Liberals may think that she "deserves" this treatment. If Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, or, God forbid, Sandra Fluke were treated this way, it would be obvious, even to a liberal, that this is wrong.

Larry Flynt has not always been an Obama supporter. Before endorsing Obama last month, he had criticized the President for being too moderate and having "compromised away far too much already" in his dealings with Republicans.

Global warming provokes laughter, even in the San Francisco Bay Area

The executive committee in charge of developing and implementing the carbon-reduction plans for the whole of the San Francisco Bay Area met last Thursday in Oakland. With the wide-ranging impact of these plans, it is not surprising that there was an overflow crowd of Bay Area residents there to listen:
Targets for carbon reduction are set by the California State laws known as AB32 and SB375. These laws are intended to show that California is doing its part to lessen the effects of global warming on the environment.

It didn't go as expected, however. Commissioner Rebecca Kaplan started her speech with what liberals would think of as widely-accepted and unremarkable comments. She said: "we know that the oil is running out and the planet will not survive." Watch as the audience bursts out laughing:

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

"The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution."

In a CSPAN interview, Van Jones admits that "environmentalists" only care about the environment when it helps advance their political cause:
You’ve never seen the environmental movement more quiet during an oil
spill. I guarantee you, if John McCain had been President, with that oil
spill, or George Bush had been President with that oil spill, I’d have
been out there with a sign protesting. I didn’t, because of who the
President was.
This reminds Glenn Reynolds of how "feminists" suddenly ceased to care about rape, women's rights, and sexual harassment in the workplace when such caring would have hurt Bill Clinton.

Liberals don't care about "the issue."  Liberals care about power.  In other words, as an SDS radical once said: "The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution."

For liberals, such hypocrisy over issues is not a fault: it is a virtue.  This is something to remember whenever you are tempted to discuss "an issue" with a liberal.

Obama warns that excessive debt endangers jobs!

In an email today, The Barack Obama campaign explains what is wrong with "Romney economics":
On the campaign trail, Mitt Romney points to his private sector experience as his chief qualification to be president.

So we took a look at that experience, and put together a new site, RomneyEconomics.com, on it. Take a look for yourself here.

Let me sum up how Romney economics works:

Romney and his partners bought companies across the United States, often loading them up with debt in the process.

Too often, they slashed pensions, benefits, and jobs, while paying themselves and their shareholders straight from the debt they'd accumulated.

Because of that debt, several of these businesses went bankrupt, leaving workers without jobs, without pensions, and without health care -- all while Romney and his partners walked away with millions.

What other companies loaded up on debt and then went bankrupt, leaving workers without jobs, but enriching well-connected investors? Solyndra comes to mind.

What else has piled on the debt while shedding jobs? The US under Obama.

Like so many Democrat criticisms of Republicans, this one seems driven by psychological projection.

Democrat base opposes gay marriage

CBS News of WJZ-Baltimore reports:

When Obama announced that his position on same-sex marriage had  evolved, it outraged some African-American pastors like Pastor and Del.  Emmett Burns.

“He has said to his base, African-Americans, ‘I am going against your beliefs and your thoughts,’” Burns said.

He’s so opposed to same-sex marriage, he told church members he will  no longer support the president and now predicts Obama will lose the  election because of it.

California's Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage, passed, in part, because of very strong support (58% to 70%, depending on who estimates it) among Black voters who turned out in large numbers for that Nov. 4, 2008. vote.

It's the regulations

Think of how many new businesses (and new jobs) that newly-made billionaire and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin could create with his fortune. The US is less likely to get those jobs now that he has renounced US citizenship. Although many speculated that that move was due to US taxes alone, Saverin has stated it was the regulations:
Saverin spokesman Tom Goodman said Sunday his renunciation was prompted not by tax considerations but by U.S. rules that make it more difficult for U.S. citizens to live and invest overseas.

“U.S. citizens are severely restricted as to what they can invest in and where they can maintain accounts,” said spokesman Tom Goodman. “Many foreign funds and banks won’t accept Americans. This was a financial rather than a tax motive.”

The problem with foreign banks accepting US funds was a result of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) which was part of the Obama-Reid-Pelosi-era Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act.

Yes, a law entitled "Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act" will drive jobs overseas. Isn't liberalism wonderful?

Another guilty plea in the plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist

The Chicago Tribune reports:
A Maryland honor student pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring to help a Pennsylvania woman known as "Jihad Jane" plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist who had offended some Muslims.

Mohammed Hassan Khalid, 18, is believed to be the youngest person ever charged with terrorism in a U.S. civilian court. He faces a sentence as high as 15 years in prison.
Last year, Colleen R. LaRose, AKA 'jihad jane', pled guilty to her part in the plot to kill cartoonist Lars Vilks.  Co-conspirator, Colorado resident Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, has also pled guilty.  Unusual among terrorists, LaRose and Paulin-Ramirez are both blondes.

The conviction may interefere with Khalid's ability to attend Johns Hopkins University where he had been accepted with a full scholarship.

Consequences of Obama's rhetoric: 15 violent attacks

At PJMedia, Bob Owens reports (hat tip: Instapundit):
The assaults on a pair of Virginian-Pilot reporters in Norfolk, Va., two weeks ago at the hands of 30 black youths, reported for the first time Tuesday, are the latest in a series of attacks driven by a warped sense of racial vigilantism hiding behind calls of “Justice for Trayvon.” At least 15 whites have been beaten not just with fists, but with potentially deadly weapons including hammers and lengths of chain. Many of the victims have been hospitalized, some may never fully recover, and one lingers on the verge of death.
More details at the link.

Of course, Pres. Obama is only the most prominent of the race-baiters in this case. Among others, NBC News has worked to incite race hatred with Dowdified quotes while ABC News spent weeks inflaming passions with false reports that Zimmerman was uninjured before admitting error.

OccupyFail: the "general strike" that wasn't

Despite claims of a "general strike," business, except for ferries, carried on as usual. As recently as a Sunday, Occupiers were promising major May Day events like occupying and closing the Golden Gate Bridge. They were going to have early morning buses drive protesters from several staging areas to the bridge. At the civic center staging area, a mere 20 occupiers showed up. The bridge rally was canceled entirely supposedly in favor of supporting union picket lines. Picket lines at San Francisco locations, however, appeared sparsely manned. The Occupiers did manage to disrupt some traffic downtown and further vandalize the city (beyond what they did last night). They had some assistance in this from City Hall: the police were under orders to "facilitate" Occupier activities. The facilitation did stop briefly when one Occupier started throwing bricks at people, leading to his arrest on felony charges of aggravated assault.

Let us start with the pre-event hype which claimed that the Occupiers would stop a major traffic artery:

They even registered the URL occupythebridge.org for this. This plan collapsed when the bridge workers union pleaded with them not to stop bridge traffic. Apparently, the union didn't think that it was a good plan to make enemies with the 100,00 commuters who use the bridge.

The Occupiers then decided to focus May Day activities on picket lines against the Golden Gate ferries. The ferry service preemptively suspended service that morning, making protests superfluous.

The first big event of May Day was the 10:00am march through the San Francisco's Mission district in support of illegal immigration. 300 or so protesters attended. After Monday's night's vandalism, there was a strong police presence and I saw no disturbances. I may post some photos from this rally at a later time.

At noon in the financial district, the occupiers held the major Occupy rally of the day, billed as a "People’s Street Festival." As the rally started, Occupiers held up banners across streets to stop traffic. Here, two occupiers explain to a truck driver that they won't let him through and, to get out, he will have to back up for most of a city block (click on any photo to enlarge it):

After they gained control of the streets, the occupiers started to paint slogans on the asphalt, as shown here:

You might wonder where were the police during such an overt act of vandalism? They were standing by watching. They were there in large numbers. Here is one of many lines of police vans present that the rally:
The police had riot helmets in hand but did nothing. A policeman told me that no permits for the rally, for the bullhorns, or for blocking streets, let alone vandalizing them, had been issued but that, to his displeasure, the police were under orders to do nothing except "facilitate."

These orders are not particularly surprising here. In San Francisco, when the occupiers speak, the Board of Supervisors listens.

The police did facilitate. Rather than try to re-open busy city streets, here are two policemen who parked their motorcycles in front of an Occupy banner to assist the Occupiers in stopping traffic:
The sound system arrived by truck courtesy of SEIU Local 87:
SEIU has a lot of power in California. They decide elections, literally: in many California counties, ballots are counted by SEIU workers.

This festival had a lot of street theater. Here, a flag with a big "99%" written on it is raised and lowered by the crowd:
Here a puppet is being assembled:
Below, a lesbian performance group tries to tame "the beast of capitalism":
As is typical of San Francisco rallies, nominally mainstream groups mix freely with the extreme left. The latter are represented below by the banner supporting the (Marxist) PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation) and the flag celebrating Che Guevara.
The Tea Party has been criticized for using the "militant" Gadsden flag, even leading to legal cases as liberals have tried to force its removal from public display. Consequently, I was surprised to find the Gadsden flag on display at the Occupy rally without repercussion. It was held by a man in an anarchist t-shirt:
The t-shirt, by the way, reads "Live like Jesus, die like him."

Tea Parties have also been criticized for having people dressing up in "silly" costumes. This even led to Glenn Beck recommending to Tea Partiers that, in order to be taken more seriously, they stop wearing costumes. Liberal marchers have never have such concerns. For that matter, you can see below one of the Occupiers dressed in the revolutionary era garb that is so favored at Tea Parties:
Below are two protesters holding signs proclaiming May 1st to be a day of "general strike" with "no work, no school, no housework, don't bank, don't buy":
By the standard of a "general strike," May Day in San Francisco was a failure. Overwhelmingly, business went on a usual. Not that businesses didn't try to be prepared. Some appeared to have a bit more security than normal, such as this Bank of America branch with two security guards standing outside:
Is that not a nice irony: a call for "no work" under a May Day "general strike" leads to increased work on May Day as businesses hire extra guards?
